Sweet 8-bitity goodness, how I missed you so!!!!! After that gauntlet of 16 and 32-bit HELL, I've totally forgotten how much time it DOESN'T take to go over simpler sprites like these. I'll be brutally honest, I was really looking forward to this batch ever since I started off this revamp series, because it was actually after playing MegaMan 9 that I got the idea for modifying sprites so that they can be seen up close.
At first I wasn't sure what to do for GalaxyMan's color, since he's going all star power all over the place when you're fighting him. So for this I just gave him a sort of pearlescent look to him that puts in all his colors at once. SPIFFY.

I'll give you the scoop like I've done for some other people, but this is becoming a much bigger FAQ than I thought so maybe posting a picture tutorial is a good idea.
It's pretty much photoshop stuff, really. The original sprites are blown up like real huge and that layer gets used for a tracing template. (Actually MS Paint does a better job of that since PS has a habit of making them a bit fuzzy.)
So sprites are basically "things meant to look like things," which I quote from Jane Lynch who sums up 8-bit VGs in Layman's terms quite well in this Wreck-it-Ralph trailer. [link]
Anyways, the process of "sprites" is pretty subjective, but the main goal is to make out the shapes of the "things" that these groups of tiles try to make themselves look like at a distance, and draw those "things" accordingly using the original pixels as nothing but a guideline for proportions.
Me personally, I use layers to separate the outline from the colors, and also the colors from each other. I'll also include some shading and some gradients, but that's more to stylize the final product and is more optional than anything.

The gradient effects absolutely make this piece! Especially on Galaxy Man and Splash Woman! Mega Man 9's sprites were already epic, now this is just godlike!

Added shading, gradients, I just love all the stylish tweaks that sprites of this type will allow. You can't really do much of that with 16-bitters.

Galaxy should've been Disco Man from the get-go with his crazy gimmicks.. Hah!

I concur. I don't even wanna guess how many people have gotten a seizure just from looking at him.
